Zephyr Craddock: Piano Teacher

While Zephyr Craddock was student at Englewood High School, she was a piano student of aunt Della Smiley Hudson and was in Hudson's piano recitals.

A 1949 Carl Fischer Spiral Music writing of Zephyr's future husband Harry B. Craddock shows that Harry was taking music lessons from Zephyr. Harry nieces Karen Ashby and LaMage Fambro were took piano lessons from Zephyr and were in Zephyr and Hudson piano recitals in the early 1950's.

Zephyr Craddock started giving piano lesson in 1950. This was also the year she started her two years at the American Conservatory of Music for her Bachelor of Music Degree with major in piano. Most of Zephyr piano students were children but she also had some adult student. Zephyr and her aunt Hudson had their students piano recitals together until Hudson died. Their last recital together was in 1968. A few of Zephyr piano recital after Hudson death included her mother students. A few recitals included her brother John Austin Martin's students. Some of those recitals were at the premier convention center, the McCormick Place. One year, Zephyr had her Kimball piano moved to the the McCormick Place of a recital. This was the only time her moved piano to the place of the recital.

During the 55 year as piano teacher, Zephyr's piano students paid two dollar per lesson plus the cost of music book, music sheets, and other music materials. There was never an increase in piano lesson cost.

The piano lesson were usually given on four weeks days and Saturday. Zephyr gave her student summer break for most years. During the 1950's and 1960's most of Zephyr students had their paino lesson on Saturday with between 18 to 26 students from about 9 AM to 7 PM. Weekday she had about 3 or 4 student in the 1950's and early 1960's. When Zephyr became a Den Mother in the later part of 1960s, she no longer gave piano lesson on Saturday mornings since Cub Pack 4541 had their meeting on Saturday mornings. The numbers of student on each of the four weekdays increased to replace ths Saturday morning time slots. The number of weekdays students are now greater than Saturday students.
