Duties of Best Man

  1. Must see that everything is packed for the journey.
  2. See to it that the clothes the groom is to "wear away" are put into a special bag to be taken wherever the reception is to be held.
  3. takes baggage to the station.
  4. If going by auto, take luggage to garage and see that its is bestowed in the car.
  5. Must see to it that the groom is dressed and ready early.
  6. Must be sure to ask for the weddind rings and the clergy man's fee.
  7. Escort groom to the church.
  8. Give groom his cane and hat after the ceremory.

Procession to the Church

  1. Brides mother goes alone or taken some brides maids with her, but reserve space for husband.

Ushers Duties

  1. The Parents of the bride alway sit in the first pew on the left, facing the church.
  2. Grooms parents sit in the first pew on the right.
  3. The first six to 16 pews on either side of the center aisle are marked off with ribbons into a reserved enclosure.
  4. Family and intimate friends sit in front of the ribbons.
  5. Usher escorts guest to seat when card is presented to him.
  6. Ushers show all guest their places.
  7. Usher always talks to guest.
  8. deportment should natural - no running or loud talkink
  9. The moment the entire wedding party is in the church, the door between the vestibule and the church are closed.
  10. groom mother goes down the aisle on the arm of the head usher, her husband follows.
  11. The escort the brides mother returns and takes his place in the procession.
  12. No one should be seated after the entrance of the brides mother is admitted
  13. Should be at the Church an hour befofore the time for the ceremony.

The flower girls were the groom's nieces Karen Ashby and LaMage Fambro.

Best man, Benjamin C. Duster II is a grandson of historic Ida B. Wells Barnett. Ida was an anti-lynching newspaper crusader and a co-founder of th NAACP.

Rev. Harvey E. Walden was appointed pastor of Grant Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church by the Bishop John A. Gregg on October 1947. Plans for an expansion program were formulated in November 1949. Rev. Walden and officers considered the purchase of properties at 4013-21 S. Drexel Boulevard. Grant moved to 4017 S Drexel Boulevard on May 7, 1950.
