RECREATION PROGRAM ADDS TUNEFUL NOTE
A speacial feature of this year's program is the establishment of both a Flutophone Band for pre-teenageers and a rythym band for the 5 to 7 age group. Mrs. Zephyr Craddock, well know music teacher, has organized these groups. Members of the Flutophone Band are required to purchase their instruments at the cost $1.50. This includes instrument and case, four issue of Flutophone Monthly and a music book. The course of study is particularly useful to pre band students.

Burton Craddock had attented art classes and other classes at Parkway Community House after school. One summer he when to Parkway Community House's day camp. Sometime the day camp walk to Washington Park. University of Chicago boarder parts of the north side of the park. the lagoons in Washington Park was in a healthy state teaming with life in the 1960's with large green catfish about 5 feet long, paint turtles, soft shell turtles, snails and other life forms. By the mid 1970's the lagoons became rather lifeless with compared to it former state in 1960's from people throwing trash into the lagoons. The park had horse paths and the place to rent the horse were next to the apartment building of Zephyr sister Gwendalyn Monroe and her hushand lived. When the apartment building became the home for Zephyr sister Alyce G. Monroe in the late 1980's, the place to rent horses was long gone and no more horse paths. Parkway Community House during one year in the 1960's was one of the community and church groups to made arangement for children to go to Pleasant Valley Farm one summer. Burton was one of the children to go to Pleasant Valley Farm. The Chicago Congregational Union purchased the land in 1953 and they built and developed Pleasant Valley Farm as a camp for inner-city children to experience the outdoors. Pleasant Valley Farm was near near Lake Villa, Illinois. Most of the trip to the farm was on the double decker passager train. There was about five bunks of boys and one bunk for girls. All of Burton's bunk mate were white. The farm had sheeps, cows, chickens, and a horse. A small pond was stocked the fish for fishing. Burton had no luck catching any fish with a fishing pole. Burton had picked picked some chicken eggs, weigth the eggs, and graded the eggs. Burton seen sheep plunged into sheep dip trough with insecticide and fungicide. Burton built a wooden boat for art craft. Burton tried to catch some frogs. Burton could hear the frog calls and see movement in the tall grass from frogs jumping. He never got a chance to see a frog except the frogs caught by another boy. Funding problems closed the camp in the 1990s.

Schools and Parking
The recent Havighusrst Report, the Hauser Report and the Chicago Board of Education Vacant Classroom Report all are the direct outgrowth of the efforts on part of an aroused citizenry to bring to light inequities that exist in the Chicago Public Schools system.

Mrs. Harry Craddock, 6536, the other "Truth squad Mothers" can feel that the inconveniences that they suffered were not in vain. They have caused a city to take an objective look at itself. We of Parkway are proud to list Mrs. Craddock as one of our outstanding residents.

Mrs. Albion T. Ward, 6514, chairman of the schools committee of T.W.O. have been attending lectures on the Chicago School System, conducted by Mr, Havighurst. The council would do well to prevail upon her to conduct a forum on the Havighurst Report for the benefit of Parkway residents.
